Here’s a write up I’ve been wanting to do since SPX, I’ve just been waiting for a certain someone to upload this comic so I could point you all to it. That someone is Nic McIvor, and the comic is Pure-O, a collection of true experiences and information, mostly about Nic’s OCD.
You can read it all here: http://nicholasmcivor.com/
Now, I hear you asking, “Oh yeah, so he’s an artist who says he has OCD. Does he *really* have it, or does he just mean that he likes to get his art just right?” And I hear you asking that because so many people IRL have asked me this when I’ve mentioned this comic and how much I liked it. I guess society just throws that phrase around, with people casually claiming to have OCD for whatever reason, the way people say “literally” instead of “figuratively”. (I know that literally has won, don’t rub it in with notes to me.)
Well, I can tell you that Nic DOES really have OCD. For real and pretty full on. Nic is a friend of mine in the real world, and this is something that he’s always been honest about and doesn’t seem embarrassed about. It’s just part of who he is. That kind of honesty and acceptance of self comes through in his work and makes this a really great little comic. (There are only twelve pages so far, but I’ve heard there will be more.)
It’s a really great look into OCD, and it showed me stuff that I didn’t know and/or hadn’t considered before. Some things are explained like the page below, other things are shown through snapshots on Nic’s life; moments that were created by OCD. If you know anyone with OCD, definitely read this comic. And if you don’t, read it anyway because it’s short and cute.
As you can see from the pages I’ve put up, the art is also top notch. LOOK HOW CUTE IT IS. Seriously, I am in love with the look of the comic and design of the characters. So cute! I’m a huge sucker for this kind of simplicity of design. As an artist, I know that you gotta work hard and know what you’re doing in order to pull this off without your art looking naive. A lot of non-artists think that simple art is easy. Sure, simplicity is easy, but GOOD simplicity is hard.
^ That’s my favourite page.
Well, that about wraps it up. Go check out Nic’s art and read Pure-O here: http://nicholasmcivor.com/
There’s nothing really on his tumblr yet, but go follow him there anyway for when he uploads in the future: http://nicksmcivor.tumblr.com/
